Day 33: Wednesday, 4/8/15, Richards, TX (70º at 6:30 am) to Shepherd, TX (81º at 2:45 pm) 67 miles, elevation changes: +1750/-1964.

Today’s theme is the weather -- it is also tomorrow's theme since the weather on Thursday is exactly the same  (I am finishing this on Thursday because I had no means to post it yesterday.)  For the 4th day (and on Thursday the 5th day) in a row it is hazy, humid, mostly cloudy, a temperature in the low 80’s with 12 – 16 mph southerly winds gusting to 25mph. We are only 75 miles north of Houston/Galveston and the Gulf of Mexico coast. The humid air is being pumped in from the Gulf. It feels just like Cape Cod on a windy humid day in July.

Bike stats: 67.1 miles ridden in 4 hrs and 31 minutes of actual biking, averaging 14.8 mph with a top speed of 29.4 mph

Highlights:
  • Finally receiving my new replacement rear fender and installing it yesterday morning during our rest day. I am now ready for wet weather which if forecasted for Friday into early next week.
  • Riding on roads that were the smoothest, except for about 10 miles, today that we have experienced in TX. It was heaven not to bounce on the chip & seal.
  • The wind was a cross wind for most of the day except the last 16 miles when it was diagonal headwind. I must have gotten used to the wind. It didn’t seem to really affect me one-way or the other.
  • We are now riding on the TX coastal plane. The terrain is gentle rolling landscape, easy to ride through.
  • Riding through the Sam Houston National Forest. It is all tall pines and oaks. It looks a lot like the Maine coastal plane except the pines aren’t hemlocks or Eastern White Pine, they are loblolly. Even the soil is sandy.

Sam Houston National Forest. The second picture is taken through my fairing with my iPhone that is mounted under it.

A lake in Sam Houston National Forest. It looks a lot like Bickford Pond, the lake where our Maine cottage is located.

Big Blue's new rear fender.

Steers at the Mexican Hill Ranch where we had our rest day.

Our tents at the Mexican Hill Ranch.

Make it a great day!
